Case Studies

Pioneering Sub-Saharan Africa’s First Mass Transit Network

  • Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
  • Ministry of Transport

Severe urban congestion and a lack of local technical capacity to manage complex rail systems.

We didn’t just plan; we built the ecosystem. GST identified 15 strategic corridors and prioritized the first two Light Rail Transit (LRT) lines. Beyond infrastructure, we developed the first locally-adapted transit operations manual in Africa and served as lecturers at Addis Ababa University.

  • 2,000 local staff trained, ensuring the system is operated by Ethiopians, not just consultants.
  • Successful launch of 2 lines serving over 120,000 daily passengers.
  • Developed the region’s first TOD commercial guidelines, transforming stations into community hubs.

Unlocking Financial Sustainability via TOD

  • Lagos, Nigeria (Blue Line)
  • Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority

Ensuring the financial viability of West Africa’s first mass transit line through non-fare revenue.

Drawing on the Hong Kong Model, GST conducted detailed surveys and provided conceptual designs for commercial development around 8 key stations along the Blue Line. We bridged the gap between global investors and local developers to create mixed-use real estate opportunities.

  • Creation of a financially sustainable roadmap reducing reliance on government subsidies.
  • Investment partnerships facilitated between local and international real estate developers.

North Africa’s Largest Integrated Transit Hub

  • Cairo, Egypt
  • National Tunnel Authority

Integrating the massive passenger flow of an international airport with suburban rail and metro lines.

  • Establishment of environmental benchmarks to track fleet performance.

Smart Charging & Infrastructure Management

  • Abu Dhabi, UAE
  • Charging Facilities and Management for Green Bus Fleet

Electrifying a fleet fails if the grid and charging infrastructure cannot support peak demand, leading to high energy costs and service downtime.

GST is managing the construction and upgrades of depots to support electrification. Crucially, we are implementing smart charging solutions that optimize charging schedules based on grid conditions, operational demand, and electricity cost-effectiveness. This includes “energy-saving measures” to minimize power wastage during the charging process.
